Dear Carolina Is Born

I am such a believer in this sentiment. Perhaps that is why I feel  a connection to my sweet, blogging buddy Kristy Woodson Harvey.

Kristy and her Mom, Beth Woodson, pin one of my favorite blogs: Design Chic and as fellow Southerners we became fast friends a few years ago even though we have never met in person.

Today is a very special day in Kristy’s life. It is the launch of her first novel, Dear Carolina, and I was privileged to get an advance copy to review.

This is the teaser that drew me in:

Frances “Khaki” Mason has it all: a thriving interior design career, a loving husband and son, homes in North Carolina and Manhattan—everything except the second child she has always wanted. Jodi, her husband’s nineteen-year-old cousin, is fresh out of rehab, pregnant, and alone. Although the two women couldn’t seem more different, they forge a lifelong connection as Khaki reaches out to Jodi, encouraging her to have her baby. But as Jodi struggles to be the mother she knows her daughter deserves, she will ask Khaki the ultimate favor…

There are others, more qualified than I, who will expound on the quality of the writing, the use of metaphor, and the skill of character development that make this book great. I just want to tell you how it made me feel. I laughed, I cringed, I cried and I rejoiced as these precious people became a part of me: a part of my family as they created their own. It made me want to trust more, to risk more, to believe more. It made me believe in humanity more and in God’s ability to use sinful, fallen people for His lofty good use.

As I designer, I was right there with Khaki as she planned and imagined her new design projects. I felt her angst and her anticipation as new books were birthed and I felt her guilt as she left her children. I have lived all of those things. However, I believe that everyone will feel what I did. Only a gifted writer can accomplish that.

Well done, Kristy. Thank you for writing about the power of joy and hope and love in a time when the world would have us believe that there is only despair.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book.
