When I saw this quote in a design magazine talking about the fear that people have to overcome when they are deciding whether or not to use a designer I just had to post it.
The thing that saddens me most about my job is misconceptions that people have about me:
“I could never afford her.”
“I would be embarrassed for her to see my house.”
“She would force me to do things that I don’t want to do or use things that I don’t like.”
“What if I hate what she recommends? How do I gracefully bow out?”
Sometimes I just want to shout from the mountaintops,
“I’m not a diva! Talk to me!” LOL
Seriously, the thing that I am most proud of about my firm is that we truly care about our clients and bend over backwards to get inside their heads/hearts and create the homes or offices that are perfect for THEM.
There are some styles that I really don’t care for and I will politely decline those assignments because I could not do it well. But there are a whole lot of styles that I really really like and since I don’t own enough houses to decorate in all of the styles that I enjoy, it brings me great joy to be able to create them for others.
It is frustrating that some television shows have given people the mistaken notion that designers are magicians who appear and for $1000 can magically transform your entire room in 24 hours. Don’t drink the kool-aid. The good ones, however, can and do stick to a budget, listen to your needs/wants and work in partnership with you and the rest of the team to create an end result that all will be proud of.
So happy decorating, and don’t be shy…. give us a call. 🙂
