Let Me Plan Your Tybee Vaca!

I just spent a surreal 5 days with sweet friends and 19 lifestyle bloggers at what was dubbed The First Annual Tybee Sleepover. Hosted by author Mary Kay Andrews, Mermaid Cottages and Rhoda from Southern Hospitality blog, we were wined and dined and generally spoiled rotten the entire trip. I will give you an overview of the trip and what you don’t want to miss on your trip to the adorable island of Tybee. Ok, basically, I will just plan your must take Tybee vacation for you. Deal?

The morning that we left, KariAnne from Thistlewood Farms wrote a post on a new app called Waterlogue and apparently the whole world read it because Instagram blew up that morning with everyone’s pictures turned into watercolors. We had to get in on the action; so, here we are tooling down the road…. all waterlogued. LOL

Yikes! I’m On You Tube.

[caption id="attachment_6141" align="aligncenter" width="338"] words of wisdom[/caption]   Granted, I don't have a shy bone in my body but there is something about "putting yourself out there"  in a big, vulnerable way that makes me a bit weak in the knees. Like going on YouTube and having a video camera stuck right in my wrinkles, wisdom lines. And hearing my voice...

Thank You Southern Hospitality

I met Rhoda from Southern Hospitality at The Chapel Market last year and what a sweet heart she is! Rhoda was one of pioneers of the blogging world so when she emailed me yesterday to say that she was writing a feature on me today you can imagine how honored I was. I haven’t even seen it yet so jump over to Southern Hospitality with me and let’s check it out! Thank you so much Rhoda.

Rhoda is the beautiful blond in front with the black top on. She just looks like she would know a thing or two about Southern Hospitality doesn’t she?

DESIGNER INSPIRATION: CINDY BARGANIER

Being very busy parents of three small children can become very taxing on a couple and their lives. It becomes difficult to find a peaceful place to go to escape the madness. One couple approached Cindy Barganier because she had designed a previous home for them, and they knew she could take on this particular challenge.

“She has always wanted a romantic canopy bed,” Cindy Barganier noted. “One that allows you to fall into down pillows with a good book and pull the sheer curtains around you and escape to your own little world for awhile.”

This project posed two minor challenges:

1.  Although the room was large, it had a low ceiling.

“I knew that using a four poster bed with canopy would make it feel even lower so I custom designed a ceiling mounted canopy that drew the eye up as far as possible,” said Barganier.

The chandelier is larger than you would expect for a bedroom, but it’s visually light. Barganier incorporated this chandelier to fool the eye and create the illusion of a higher ceiling, while the blue ceiling above it is meant to suggest an open sky.

Maxwell, Well Loved

Gregory Peck with the ladies of Maxwell back in the day.

I must admit that I am humbled and surprised by the response to yesterday’s post about the O’Club at Maxwell AFB. I really struck a nostalgic cord with so many of you. Of all the beautiful places and things that I have written about over the last three years this one received more shares and comments than any. I thought you might like to see a few more pictures and hear some of the stories that I didn’t tell last time.

Before And Afters At Maxwell AFB

Maxwell AFB renovation

I was working on a before and after submission for a publication when it occurred to me that I had never written about this project here. How did that happen?

Several years ago I was approached by the wing commander at Maxwell Air Force Base about handling the renovation of the Officers’ Club. It was a fabulous project because he, Colonel Pete Costello, was passionate about design and wanted to bring the badly run-down club back to its 1920’s glory days. It was the most challenging project of my entire career for many reasons, chief among them:

the time line. Maxwell had just learned that they would be hosting, for the first time, Corona , the most important strategy event of all in the military. Top brass from all branches  the world over would be attending. We had 6 weeks to completely renovated the club.

Say what!!!

Throw in the next wrinkle,

it was Christmas and all of the factories that I needed to use were about to close for 2 weeks for inventory.

Throw in the next wrinkle,

I could not bring any of my own sub-contractors in. We had to use the “talent” available through the federal penitentiary that is housed at Maxwell.

After hyperventilating Jeff and I attacked the project with gusto. This phase involved the upstairs bar and a multi-purpose room that was to  look like a gentleman’s cigar club. I am going to show a couple of pictures of those projects then concentrate on the real bugger boo that came as phase II, The Pit. It ain’t called the pit for nuthin! Phew. That placed smelled to high heaven. It is located  in the basement and is the hang-out for the younger crowd. Let’s just say it needed a lot of TLC.
